Faculty Senate monthly meeting - Speaker view
Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
19:11
Ayyyyyyyyy snow day! =D
Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
19:33
Far too late. Already excited.
Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
20:11
The stairs outside the Music Building on the Bruce Hall side are great fun when they ice over.
G5 - Daniel Peak
20:24
I have a snow shovel
Jennifer Cowley
21:54
Just an FYI that there was a delay in posting the additional tests conducted through Curative on our COVID dashboard. Should be reflected this Friday showing this week and last weeks tests.
Jennifer Cowley
26:10
To be clear - the # of positive cases is accurate - only the # of tests completed was delayed.
G7-Olness, Gloria
30:13
Will the president be commenting on highlights of the recent state of the university address?
GSC Guest_Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
31:47
I mean, I have ideas.
G7 McAfee Jason
31:50
Promotions!!!!
GSC Guest_Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
31:54
We can definitely spend that.
Jennifer Cowley
32:27
It also said we had to provide receipts in 3 days for expenses! I mean spending spree with $47.8M in 3 days... Geez.
Jennifer Cowley
32:51
This is why we teach our students to proof read drafts!
Scott Belshaw, Vice Chair
33:09
Hahahah…
G6 Boesch, Miriam
34:05
Good time to address salary compression
Jennifer Cowley
35:22
Sorry - no Miriam. Remember it's one time $. And we lost $70M+ so far this year so there are big holes everywhere for basic expenses. I can talk about top priorities - for me #1 is $ to cover summer instruction.
Scott Belshaw, Vice Chair
35:37
Thank you Neal for being the Tom Brady of UNT..hahaha
G7-Olness, Gloria
36:25
State of the university highlights?
G99 Sterling Bailey
43:25
I work at HSC and agree that is it a GREAT program
G99 Sterling Bailey
44:14
Having financial mentoring/education supported by the university os tremendously helpful
G8 Broberg Kirsten Soriano
44:39
No question from me
G2 Philbrick Jodi
44:41
No question
Scott Belshaw, Vice Chair
47:21
Please let your constituents know about the COACHE! Thank you Provost!
Manjula Salimath
50:07
Totally agree - the COACHE survey is of great importance to faculty, providing actionable data for policy changes. The more the participation, the better the outcomes.
G-9 James M. Martin
50:10
With the pivot points in mind are full or partial remote options no longer available for courses that were not delivered in that format prior to Fall of 2019?
Jennifer Lane
50:40
There was a message just today to all faculty alerting that the COACHE is coming.
Manjula Salimath
51:29
Yes! Next they will be getting a unique link to take the survey from Harvard, our research collaborator on COACHE
G2: O'Toole, Erin
52:19
Will there be options for remote work in fall semester for library faculty who don't teach courses? We can effectively do much of our work from home.
Jennifer Lane
52:47
There are a couple of other Senate surveys out now: 1. Academic Integrity is out now and will close soon, 2. PAC evaluation, next will be either COACHE or a very brief survey about FIS.
G7 McAfee Jason
52:56
When I bring up SPOTs, I ask my students to give me constructive criticism. Tell me what I can do better.
G7-Olness, Gloria
53:16
Have Deans and Chairs received upper-admin guidance on the valid (and invalid) rationale options for exclusion of SPOT evals from annual review?
Jennifer Lane
53:18
@Jason, does this work?
G7 McAfee Jason
54:50
According to what I have seen, it does. I an candid with my students. “I know this part of the course stinks, what would you suggest I do differently?”
G3: Cherry, William
54:51
On SPOT, one concern is whether something should be done about blatantly racist or threatening comments. Recent comments instructors in math have received include: a request to fire immigrants and a threat to kick an instructor's teeth in (this was pre-covid)
G7-Olness, Gloria
55:52
Do those variable options rest with the faculty or with the chair?
Manjula Salimath
57:58
COACHE launches on Monday and runs till April. Its once in 3 years, takes about 25 min to complete. We will get comparable data from other peer institutions, so we can use those for external benchmarks for faculty satisfaction on a variety of dimensions. Faculty senate will get the results and it has been successfully used it for improving work climate at UNT.
Scott Belshaw, Vice Chair
01:01:28
Thanks Manjula!
Neal Smatresk
01:03:15
Thanks for all you do! Let us know how we can help.
Jennifer Lane
01:03:30
Thank you, Neal!
Scott Belshaw, Vice Chair
01:03:40
Thanks Neal!!
Scott Belshaw, Vice Chair
01:05:02
Ed started here when Joshua Chilton was president!!
Jennifer Lane
01:12:18
There are many presentations today. Please submit questions in the chat rather than on the floor if you have any. Thank you.
Scott Belshaw, Vice Chair
01:13:16
Ed.. Can you tell the faculty how the police can help with a disruptive and out of control student in class.
G6 Boesch, Miriam
01:13:23
Is it best to use Eagle Alert or contact the CARE team directly for student issues?
G5 Sexton, Mike
01:16:19
Ed, thank you for serving UNT.
G1 Aviles Diz, Jorge
01:16:31
Thanks, Ed!
G6 Boesch, Miriam
01:16:32
Sorry, I meant early alert
Jennifer Cowley
01:16:37
FYI, as a followup on the SPOT discussion. Mike McPherson let me know that his office can remove a specific comment in a SPOT score if it is blatantly racist, involve abusive language - such as the example William shared. The faculty member can contact Mike's office. Comments would not be removed if they are not blatant/explicit.
Jennifer Lane
01:17:54
@thank you, Provost Cowley!
G1 Aviles Diz, Jorge
01:19:51
Thanks, Jullie!

Thanks, Melissa!
G6 Christopher Long
01:22:30
These changes are widely opposed by faculty in COE.
G7-Olness, Gloria
01:24:00
@Christopher--Possibility of co-chairing as a solution?
G3: Cherry, William
01:24:41
Yes, it has long been policy that NTT faculty cannot be dissertation committee chairs
G7 McAfee Jason
01:28:05
Would it be simpler to make a path to make NTTF’s FULL members?
G3: Cherry, William
01:29:34
Is it possible that the real problem is that cerrtain units are short on tenure-system faculty, and that maybe this is what needs to be addressed?
G6 Boesch, Miriam
01:29:43
What does it require for full membership so that some of these programs don't have to seek authorization every time they have a doctoral student that needs to be chaired by a NTT faculty?
G7-Olness, Gloria
01:30:47
Take out the "as required"?
G6 - Zhang, Tao
01:32:35
looks better
G7 James Bednarz
01:34:29
That is much clearer.
GSC Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
01:34:53
Myself and Senator Martin have both had our hands up for some time.
G3: Cherry, William
01:34:55
should we say "exceptions in limited circumstances"?
G3: Cherry, William
01:35:21
to make clear that it should not be a commong thing throughout the university?
G-8 Gerling, Daphne
01:35:32
I support the limited circumstances change
G7-Olness, Gloria
01:35:38
Put the "in limited circumstances" after the "may be permitted"
GSC Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
01:39:35
My hand was for a statement about the entire piece: I wanted to say that I think overall this will benefit students tremendously.
GSC Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
01:39:41
Thanks!
Jennifer Lane
01:40:18
@Tiffany, Thank you so much for placing your comment in the chat.
GSC Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
01:42:04
Sure thing!
Jennifer Cowley
01:44:22
Well. but tech comm has huge enrollments in general education courses and small # of majors.
G7 McAfee Jason
01:44:22
HOW does one cheat in Dance?
Jennifer Lane
01:44:44
most classes have written tests
GSC Tiffany Miller (She/Her/Hers)
01:44:50
I think they have written exams/quizzes.
G7 McAfee Jason
01:45:17
Sorry, my sarcasm doesn’t come across via text.
G1: Lam, Chris
01:45:25
Yes, Provost Cowley is right. I’d venture to guess most of tech comm violations are coming in our intro course, which is nearly all non-majors
G7 Hughes Lee
01:46:05
Should probably compare SCH generation not majors in a department
G7 Hughes Lee
01:46:32
More students take courses than are necessarily majors
G-9 James M. Martin
01:46:49
I think there may be more violations in Media Arts than is perceived by those who participated in the survey.
Jennifer Cowley
01:47:30
Tracy - I volunteer Mike's office - we can easily pull SCH from the Insights system by dept. which would probably give you a better sense of incidents.
Mike McPherson; he, him, his

Given that we couldn't have the AAARG update since Carol couldn't get audio. Just a quick note that these are the current topics of focus in AAARG. Phased expansion of clinical services (Autism Center), upcoming: summer camps and study abroad
